Described by Dickens Essay Example for Free

Described by Dickens EssayThe extended simile at the end of the first chapter depicts the children as vessels or jars, to be filled to the top with facts until they are full. The allegory portrays the children as inanimate objects, which shows the lecturer the arrogance of GradgrindVessels then and there arranged in order effect to study imperial gallons of facts poured into them until they were full to the brim.Dickens describes them as if they are empty and know nothing. Therefore they have to learn facts whether they same it or not. The short sentences and repetition in the sentences of the opening of the second chapter aids the exposition of Gradgrind as it shows the reader there is no manipulating this man and what you decide is what you get. He will never reassign his mind. The extended metaphor, a kind of cannonaway shows the reader Gradgrinds idea of how children should be properly educated. He believes that imaginations are to be stormed away and children should m ature through facts. He is described like a cannon loaded to the fit with facts this shows the harshness of his character and the machine-like qualities he holds.Sissy Jupe is described by Dickens as dark-eyed and dark-haired her come up is tanned as Sissy has grown up with the circus she has an interesting background and a inventive imagination she is not just filled with facts. The colour of her eyes and hair reflects her traveller background. Whereas, Bitzer is described by Dickens as light-eyed and light-haired. His skin seems to be white, in contrast to Sissys tanned complexion. This description shows the harshness of the blue(a) education system, on his appearance. The audience has no sympathy for the coldness of his character even though he is seen as a model pupil from a model school by Gradgrind, who has forced bulge out any imagination Bitzer had and filled him with facts. His description of a horse compared to Sissys attempt shows the reader the machine-like almost r obotic manner in which he is able to reel off factsQuadruped. Graminivorous. His character is the opposite of Sissy. Gradgrind refers to her as a number, heretofore to Bitzer by name, as Sissy has only been at the school for a short time, but is referred to as Girl number twenty as she is new to the school her education is not as Gradgrind would like it to be, this in turn alienates her.During the fifth chapter, we meet the characters Sissy and Bitzer again as their chase come to a halt when they bump into Gradgrind. After explaining why she was running, Gradgrind comments, as he cannot understand why Sissy should be run afterRun after? repeated Mr Gradgrind. Who would run after you?Gradgrind does not know Sissy, and sees her as an outcast. He does not see why she should be run after, and cannot understand why someone would extremity her. His question is answered when Bitzer enters in the next paragraph. He is described as the colourless boy. This creates lack of empathy in the re ader towards Bitzer and how he has been manipulated by Gradgrind and the school. As Bitzer is running after Sissy, although described as without fancy (colourless), he soundless is a child as he was pulling fountains to scare Sissy.Once escorted by Sissy to her home, we see Sissys fears of Gradgrind through the way she talks to him. She also seems embarrassed by the state of her homeThis is it, sir, and if you wouldnt mind, sir this is the house.Sissys politeness to Gradgrind, as well as showing a well-mannered child also show how nervous she is slightly him, and the fear she has of him. Sissy is frightened of Gradgrind as she sees that as she is from a poor lifestyle, because of the shabbiness of her home, she will not be allowed to continue her studies, as those with a proper education will do better in the future. The audience empathises with Sissy because of this.In conclusion, Gradgrind has a stern manner and is very controlling of his pupils and his children because he is a very hard character he is a man of realities. Bitzer is a machine-like character his white face reflects the coldness of his life with only facts in it. This contrasts to Sissys character, which is imaginative, because she lacks the proper formal education Bitzer has received. Hard Times is found on, and shows, Dickenss view of rejection, to the callous determination of Victorian greed. The audience empathises with Sissy the most as her character seems to be lost and the most fragile. The audience do not empathise with Gradgrind because of his stern and cold nature, which, as Bitzer becomes a model student, causes the audience to empathise with neither of the two characters.

Cultural enrichment Essay Example for Free

Cultural enrichment EssayLast February 17, 2009, I went to the ISU Juried scholar Exhibition which was located in the Center for Performing and Arts Gallery building. The juror of the exhibition was Mr. Ronald Leax, Halsey C. an Ives prof of Art in Washington University, St. Louis, MO. Most of the paintings that were being exhibited illustrate beauty and nature. Ive spy that close of the people that were there during the time of my visit appear uninterested with the imposture that was surrounding them. They barely noticed and appreciated art in its raw form because most were just grumpy eating and chatting. They a lot didnt understand why their teacher sent them to the gallery I believe they just went there for the sake of the class credits that they are going to get. But they were also a few who knew what art and beauty was, they showed their appreciation by praising and scrutinizing the works in the gallery. Other people were also busy having their pictures taken beside the beautiful paintings. As for myself, I was really intrigued by the works and the masters behind those paintings. How I wished I could come up with such art pieces that to me come uponmed like it was done during the middle ages. It was also socialize to bide how some paintings depicted things about religion and politics it shows that people are really touch with the current events happening and are even able to express it through art. It was also fascinating to watch the paintings that were cross-over from realism to non-objectivism.Those kinds of paintings are the ones that entertain the naked eye without much thought provocation. Those paintings are the ones that caught my eye because it is relaxing and entertaining to look at them. At the end of the day, I just hope that more would gather up to appreciate the beauty of art rather than be overly absorbed from school or from work. They should see that art is relaxing to the soul and to the mind so people who are stressed out could go to art exhibits to unwind and to refresh their souls.

Why Stalin emerged as the dominant political force by 1929 Essay Example for Free

Why Stalin emerged as the dominant political force by 1929 EssayA ruthless tyrant (Totsky), Stalin built up power inwardly the Bolshevik company, at first quietly and almost unnoticeably, but then apply the combination of his position to assure him almost limitless powers. He removed his adversary step by step tactically switching sides of the society, and thus clearing his air up to the top. Essentially Stalin emerged the dominant political force by 1929 because he removed all opposition from the society making him the prime leader of the party.Stalin held a number of what at first seemed as unnoticeable posts, which afterwards gave Stalin as extensive amount of power within the party. His titles were Commissar of Nationalities (1917), Chairman of Orgburo (1919), Chairman of Workers and Inspectorate (1919) and later General secretary of the Party (1921). With these posts Stalin had access to personnel files on all of the party members. out-of-pocket to the organize of the party at the time this unintentionally gave him prerogative, as he became the indispensable link in the string of command.Stalin also gained the business to appoint and withdraw individuals to/ from official positions within the party. He used this to his advantage and appointed his own people, (ie those who were loyal to Stalin and followed the same ideology as him,) in key positions. Stalin consequently replaced individuals from key positions and replaced them with his supporters. This in head gave him overwhelming power as he could count on these people to vote for him and therefore no matter the ability of the individuals or groups that opposed him, he could always out-vote and out-manoeuvre them. Hence Stalin could like a shot shape the party leading to him becoming a dominant political force by 1929.Starting from 1923 Lenin headstrong to increase the membership of the party with more industrial workers, which carried on until 1925 and was known as Lenins Enrolme nt. Over 500,000 workers were recruited, double the partys membership and this was to have important consequences. The new members were largely uneducated and politically nave. As a general secretary, it was Stalin who was responsible for supervising Lenins Enrolment. E.H. Carr pointed out that the Bolshevik Party changed from the elite party of Lenin to the mass party of Stalin. Stalin was therefore building prodigious support, later leading to him becoming the dominant political force in Soviet politics.Stalin was also strengthened unintentionally by Lenin and his attack on the Factionalism. Lenin condemned the party squabbling and the opposition to party from within the party. Lenin effectively quel guide and frustrated any serious attempt to reprehended party policy or decisions. This made it increasingly difficult to form legitimate opposition from within the party. This bourgeoned Stalins power as foremost he was a beneficiary of the attack on factionalism and the charge of f actionalism provided him with a ready weapon for resisting challenges to the agency he had already began to exercise. This was one of the tactics employed by Stalin to secure him the next successor to Lenin. Due to these tactics Stalin emerged as the dominant political force by 1929.The party was divided among many issues with the immature Economic Policy having the greatest significance. Those who were critical of the NEP were branded remaining communists and those who accepted that as long as the NEP continued to meet the nations food needs then it should be preserved, were branded right communists. Stalins view was that a rivals attitude towards the NEP might be weakness to be exploited if it could be established that his views indicated deviant red thinking it becomes possible to undermine, if not destroy, his position within the party. Stalin therefore switched sides of the party by switching sides of the public debate to undermine his rivals step by step. Therefore his ri vals would loose credit while he would gain credit. stock-still the main and most notorious tactic used by Stalin was to keep his political status within the party centre. This way Stalin could easily move from left to right to weaken and plot against his rivals. The Politburo saw Trotsky as a grater danger than Stalin. Stalin therefore first formed triumvirate with Zinoviev and Kamenev to block Trotsky, who was soon accused of criticising the Cult of Lenin and his absence seizure in Lenins funeral was made to be seen as heresy. The new proletarian membership helped Stalin to remove Trotsky as the party was not impressed by the cultured image of Trotsky. As a result Trotsky was outvoted in 1927, which led to congress accepting the proposal that Trotsky is to be expelled from the party and was soon internally exiled. As his next step, Stalin used the fact that Zinoviev and Kamenev sided with Trotsky over the issue of NEP against them and to also get them out of his way. Stalin moved t o support the right of the party, who believed in NEP as a saviour of Russias present economy. In result, the 1925 party congress defeated all left wing motions and denounced the lefts as traitors of the revolution. Hence Kamenev and Zinoviev were exiled from the party. After the left of the party had been defeated Stalin started work to defeat the right of the party. After two good harvests at the end of 1925 Stalin used the argument that grain prices were falling as peasants were withholding grain to force up the price of grain. Stalin saw this as capitalism at the write down of the cities. He introduced a criminal law causing the concealment of grain to be a crime. He sent soldiers into the countryside to punish the peasants, This led to difference of opinioning in some areas and Bukharin in result denounced Stalin as a tyrant. Bukharin and his followers were condemned as right-wing deviationists. At the end of 1928 Bukharin resigned as editor of Pravda and along with Trotsky and Rykov they were expelled from the party. Therefore now Stalin had successfully removed the opposition from both sides of the party, filling the gaps in the party with his followers and in result leaving him as the only political force to rule the Soviet Union. In conclusion Stalin finished his opposition in order to leave him as the only obvious candidate to succeed Lenin as the leader of the Bolshevik Party. Stalin rose to power using his strategic position as the General Secretary to his advantage. The structure of the party also benefited him as his actions did not seem to be that significant in his fight for power at first hand and therefore hiding him from condemnation.
